Truckee, CA — 8/12/2024 — As an organization dedicated to promoting transit, the Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Association (TNT/TMA) Board of Directors has officially adopted a resolution in support of the Town of Truckee’s Essential Services Revenue Measure on this November’s ballot.
This measure proposes a ½ percent increase in the local sales tax, generating approximately $3.5 million annually. Unlike the current general sales tax structure, where only about 24 cents of every dollar returns to the Town of Truckee, 100% of the revenue from this measure would stay within the community. The funds will be focused on maintaining essential local services, including:
- Disaster Preparedness: Expanding roadside vegetation management, evacuation planning, and improving community disaster preparedness.
- Protecting the Environment: Additional work to keep pollution out of our local creeks, rivers, lakes, and waterways.
- Community Amenities: Keeping our local parks, recreation and community facilities safe, clean and well-maintained.
- Public Transit: Establishing reliable funding for Town-operated transit services like TART Connect to support community mobility for all, including seniors and people with disabilities.
- Workforce Housing: Further efforts to provide workforce housing to residents and essential professionals, including teachers, healthcare workers, and first responders.
Notably, essential purchases like groceries and prescription medicine will be exempt from this tax, minimizing the financial impact on residents with fixed or limited incomes.
Sara Van Siclen, Executive Director of TNT/TMA, highlighted the importance of this measure, stating, “The proposed sales tax represents a sustainable funding source for essential services, including TART Connect, the free, on-demand, micro-transit service, which is crucial for the community. This measure aligns with TNT/TMA’s mission to enhance local transportation and support the well-being of our residents.”
Van Siclen added, “As a dedicated advocate for Truckee and North Tahoe transportation, the TNT/TMA Board is committed to ensuring that these vital services are preserved and strengthened. The passage of this measure will empower our community to continue addressing the unique transportation challenges we face.”
